Tuticorin is also known as Thoothukudi. Also popularly known as 'Pearl City', Tuticorin is a seaport that serves South Tamilnadu, as well as the inland cities of Coimbatore, Madurai and Tirunelveli. The city, which lies about 540 km South West of Madras in the Gulf of Mannar, has a tropical climate with hot and humid environ round the year.

Tuticorin is the emerging industrial hub in Tamilnadu.Tuticorin has a major port which is poised to achieve 60 million tonnes if cargo, in the near future. Tuticorin is well connected by four way national highways and broad gauge rail link. Major Chemical Industries like Sesa Sterlite, SPIC Ltd, TAC Ltd, DCW Ltd, V.V.Titanium Pigments, Ind Bharath, Coastal, NLC Thermal, Venus Water Heater, DSF, Theva & Co, Agsar Paints, Zirconium etc are operating at Tuticorin and almost all the major industires are expanding their production. Major super thermal power projects like Coastal Energen P Ltd, Ind Barath Ltd, Tuticorin Thermal Power Station and NLC Power Corporation are operating at Tuticorin. SIPCOT has proposed to acquire about 5000 acres of land near Tuticorin, for the Tuticorin - MAdurai Industrial Corridor to provide world class infrastructure for industries. As a port city Tuticorin has one of the major attractions in the form of Tuticorin Port, which is strategically built to handle a host of international cargoes. Those interested in the historical extravagance may tour to Ettaiyapuram Palace, which was built during the reign of the Pandyas of Madurai. The Basilica of a Lady of Snows is a must visit. Built some 400 years ago the church is known for its antiquity and sacred among all communities.
